‘Unfathomable sadness’: Family, friends react after Durham teen killed in e-bike crash

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — "Unfathomable sadness" is how a Durham mother is describing the loss of her teenage son. Jack O'Shea, 15, was killed while riding an electronic bicycle at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Durham Police Department. Police said Jack was struck by an SUV driven by 26-year-old Joseph Savarino, the grandson of former Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. According to Durham police, Savarino was driving impaired and is charged with misdemeanor DWI. He was released on $100,000 secured bond after his first appearance in Durham County court on Monday and is scheduled to make his next appearance on May 20, records show. At the time of his death, Jack was a student at Cardinal Gibbons High School. a private school in Raleigh, where he would have graduated in 2029. Jack played baseball and basketball for the crusaders and was a fan of the Blue Devils. In a social media post, Jack's mother said he began his last day by asking to go to confession. He then played two baseball games before heading out on his usual bicycle ride with his friends. Jack's mother wrote that his "light will continue to shine in the hearts" of those who knew his "vibrant and energetic spirit". Family friend and neigh Lisa Carden shared memories of Jack. "I'd see him all the time," Carden said. "He would ride his bike in our neighborhood. He had a smile that would light up a room. "Jack was a great kid," she said. Very easy to make friends with. He was the same age as my daughter. They've been friends since they were three. I'm very sad for his family. "Definitely a loss for the community. This is a tragic accident for both sides." The Cardinal Gibbons High School Community came together on campus to pray the Rosary and celebrate mass in Jack's honor Monday. Grief counselors were also available for students. A funeral for Jack will take place on Friday, followed by a celebration of life. His family is receiving assistance from Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham.
