Two men killed in separate off-road vehicle crashes in Maine

Two men were killed in separate off-road vehicle crashes in Maine on Friday and Saturday, according to the Maine Warden Service. The first crash occurred around 3 p.m. Friday on Shore Lane, a private dirt road along Cold Stream Pond in Lowell. Wardens said Frank McBride, 75, of Lowell, died from injuries sustained in the crash.A preliminary investigation found McBride was operating a 2023 Can-Am Maverick side-by-side when he veered off the right side of the road on a curve. The vehicle crossed a yard and driveway, struck a metal basketball pole, glanced off one tree and then hit another tree head-on before coming to a stop. The road was closed for part of the afternoon while investigators processed the scene. The crash remains under investigation. The second fatal crash was reported around 7:15 p.m. Saturday on Palmer Pond Road in Mayfield.Game wardens responding to the scene found a 2016 Honda CRF450R dirt bike off the side of the dirt road and its operator, David Pooler, 43, of Waterville, deceased.According to an initial investigation, Pooler was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the dirt bike and crashed. Wardens said Pooler was not wearing a helmet, and speed appears to have been a contributing factor.
