Two hospitalized after crash on W.Va. 2 near Ergon refinery

A two-vehicle crash along W.Va. 2 in front of the Ergon oil refinery in Newell sent two drivers to the hospital with severe injuries Tuesday afternoon. Officials said the driver of one vehicle was traveling northbound when the vehicle went left of center and struck another. The drivers were the only occupants in each vehicle, and both were responsive when crews arrived. Hydraulic rescue tools were used to remove the driver of one vehicle. At least one medical helicopter was called to East Liverpool City Hospital. Officials said at least 20 Ergon employees assisted during the emergency response. “At about 3:10, our gun employees heard a loud bang, they looked out and saw a two-vehicle accident," Deputy Dante Dijirolania said. "They immediately notified Hancock County dispatch. They also sent out about 20 guys out of the gates. When I showed up, they were fully re-engaged and they were able to both drive us to get out and help with all the injuries that they had at the time.” As of Tuesday evening, W.Va. 2 has reopened to drivers.
