Two fatal crashes occur at same Sumner County intersection, THP says
Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating two separate fatal crashes that occurred at the same Hartsville Pike intersection in Sumner County on Monday, including one that happened while deputies were responding to the first wreck. According to preliminary crash reports released by THP, the first crash on June 15 involved a 2000 Ford E250 cargo van driven by Brady L. Bowden of Tennessee. Investigators said the van was traveling eastbound on Hartsville Pike near Corum Hill Road when it crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and entered a ditch. The vehicle then struck an embankment, became airborne and overturned multiple times before coming to rest down an embankment. Bowden suffered fatal injuries. No charges were listed in the preliminary report. While Sumner County Sheriff's deputies were on the shoulder responding to that crash, a second fatal collision occurred nearby, according to THP. Investigators said a 2016 Honda Civic driven by 71-year-old Jackie R. Neal was traveling westbound on Hartsville Pike around 6:08 a.m. when the vehicle crossed the center line into the eastbound lane. The Honda struck a 2004 GMC truck head-on before a third vehicle, a 2021 Kia Forte, collided with the GMC on the driver's side. Neal suffered fatal injuries in the crash, according to the report. The driver of the GMC, identified as a 61-year-old Tennessee man, was injured. The driver of the Kia, a 25-year-old Tennessee woman, was also injured. THP noted that deputies responding to the earlier fatal crash were parked on the right shoulder and that no travel lanes were blocked at the time of the second collision. Both crashes remain under investigation.
