Tollway maintenance worker fatally struck by car along I-294
DES PLAINES, Ill. — A portion of I-294 was shut down on Saturday morning after a deadly crash involving a tollway maintenance worker. According to Illinois State Police troopers, the crash unfolded just before 4:30 a.m. along the southbound lanes of I-294, near milepost 41.5 in Des Plaines. A preliminary investigation indicates that three tollway maintenance workers were conducting pothole repairs when they were struck by a car. All three workers were taken to the hospital, where one of them was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet identified the individual killed. Because of the crash, crews have shut down southbound lanes of I-294 in the area, and traffic is currently being diverted off at Golf Road. It is unclear how long the closures will remain in place.
