Thanksgiving period in Georgia marked by 11 deadly accidents and 400+ DUI arrests, officials report

Georgia experienced a high number of fatal crashes during the Thanksgiving travel period, data from the Georgia Department of Public Safety shows. Between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the following Sunday, there were 11 fatalities across the state, including a tragic accident in Newton County. The Georgia State Patrol responded to six of the deadly crashes, while local law enforcement handled the others. In total, there were 498 reported crashes with 236 injuries, with 48 of those accidents involving driving under the influence. Law enforcement arrested 422 drivers for DUI offenses, as well as issued 680 distracted driving citations and 847 seatbelt citations. These figures show a slight improvement from the previous year, with fewer incidents reported in 2025 compared to 2024. AAA had estimated that around 2.3 million Georgian travelers would journey for Thanksgiving, mostly by driving to their destinations. It was mentioned that Atlanta was ranked among the top 10 Thanksgiving destinations for the second consecutive year.
