Teen charged with homicide by intoxicated use in fatal Fond du Lac County crash

FOND DU LAC (WLUK) – Madylin Blonigen, 16, admittedly used THC vape cartridges shortly before a fatal crash Saturday, and was charged Wednesday with homicide by intoxicated use a vehicle. Blonigen, who did not have a driver’s license, is expected to make an initial court appearance Wednesday. She also faces two counts of knowingly operating a vehicle without a license causing great bodily harm. Unlike alcohol, where there are tolerable limits, because THC is illegal, any use or presence in the system can result in charges, regardless of if there was impairment. Blonigen said she had not been drinking. A blood draw was taken, but no results are cited in the complaint. According to the criminal complaint, the crash happened at 7:17 p.m. Saturday in Malone. The teens were in a SUV on County Highway HH, when Blonigen missed a curve. “The investigation showed the defendant’s vehicle struck a culvert, launched into the air, struck a pole, and rolled over,” the complaint states. “The defendant admitted to consuming THC from a vape cartridge pen “before” the crash and indicated that THC consumption occurred between going to two residences that night. Four vape pens were recovered as evidence during the investigation, with one suspected to contain THC and the other three pens suspected of containing nicotine.” There were six people in the vehicle, including one riding in the trunk. A 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the passengers told police Blonigen was driving too fast before the crash. The teens had no particular destination, according to one of the passengers. “VICTIM 5 stated they were coming from VICTIM 2's mom's house, in Kiel. VICTIM 5 stated that they were just hanging out while watching a movie. She further advised that she lives in Sheboygan but comes over to hangout sometimes. VICTIM 5 told SGT. WILL they were headed for a drive out in the country but had no destination in mind. She said their ultimate plan was to go back to VICTIM 2's mom's house. VICTIM 5 confirmed that MADYLIN was the driver of the vehicle,” the complaint states.
