Teen charged in fatal Chesapeake crash that killed landscaper

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A teenager has been charged in connection with the fatal crash on Johnstown Road May 29, according to the Chesapeake Police Department. The teen, 19-year-old Synclair Tyrone Mayes, has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter. The crash occurred shortly after 9:45 a.m. on May 29 along Johnstown Road near the Kingsbridge Apartments. According to officials, a black Cadillac sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Johnstown Road before hitting a red Honda that was turning onto Johnstown from Britwell Drive. The collision caused the sedan to lose control and leave the roadway, striking and killing 60-year-old Guadalupe Rivera while he was maintaining the lawn along the sidewalk. The sedan was driven by Mayes. Mayes and the driver of the red Honda SUV were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries following the crash. The family of Rivera has set up a GoFundMe site for funeral expenses.
