Teen among 2 identified in deadly suspected DUI crash near Moss Landing
The California Highway Patrol is updating the public on a deadly crash that occurred Saturday night on Highway 1 in the Moss Landing area.CHP is now saying that two people were killed in the crash on Highway 1 near Springfield Road, after previously saying that three people were killed.CHP said officers responded at about 10:18 p.m. Saturday to reports of a traffic crash on State Route 1 north of Springfield Road. Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed for several hours.A preliminary investigation found that David Olaeta, 51, was driving a GMC pickup southbound on Highway 1 when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed over the double yellow lines and sideswiped a northbound Ford pickup.The GMC then continued southbound in the northbound lane and crashed head-on with a Honda sedan traveling behind the Ford.The Ford was carrying four people from Watsonville. A 58-year-old woman in the Ford was taken to a hospital with possible injuries, while the other occupants reported no injuries.The Honda was occupied by three males, including the driver. All three were taken to a hospital with major injuries, where two of them later died.The third victim inside the sedan is in the hospital in critical condition, according to an updated media release from CHP on Monday.The Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the people killed in the crash as Paulino Hilario De Los Santos, 33, and Alberto Martinez Garcia, 17, both from Watsonville.CHP said Olaeta showed signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.He was taken to a hospital for suspected serious injuries and was later booked into Monterey County Jail.Jail records show Olaeta was booked on charges including DUI, causing injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
