Suspected hit-and-run driver arrested after 14-year-old on bike killed in crash: Police

DENVER (KDVR) — A suspected driver is in custody after a Thornton hit-and-run crash Saturday night that killed a teen on a motorized bike, a spokesperson for the Thornton Police Department said. The family of 14-year-old Jayden Marrujo, who was killed in the crash, placed a small memorial of flowers and stuffed animals at the scene. Elliot Benally, Marrujo’s uncle, said Sunday, “He’s a good kid, you know what I mean? He’s a big kid with a bigger heart.” Benally says he had dreams to play on the offensive line for Northglenn High School. “He was loved in the community a lot, especially by his school. Everybody there, his football coaches, his teammates, his friends," Benally said. The crash happened just before 9:45 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street, the Thornton Police Department said. The bike was moving north on Huron Street when the suspect vehicle, a black 2013 BMW 328i, speeding on the road hit the bike from behind, police said. The driver continued north on Huron and did not stop. "Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion." A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money for the victim's funeral costs and memorial service. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Thornton Police Department at 720-977-5150.
