Suburban Chicago resident accused in fatal hit-and-run collision.

A man from suburban Chicago is facing charges for his involvement in a fatal crash and leaving the scene without reporting it, according to authorities. Christian Antonio Vargas, age 30, is accused of failing to report a deadly motor vehicle accident and failing to provide information and assistance, as stated by Des Plaines police. The charges were filed on January 22 after a thorough investigation. Investigators determined that Vargas was driving a black Ford Focus in a crash that occurred on July 27, 2024. The crash involved a motorcycle and Vargas' Ford at 967 S. Elmhurst Road. Despite efforts from the Des Plaines Fire Department, the motorcyclist, identified as Nico Watkins, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene. It was found that the motorcycle was speeding northbound on Elmhurst Road when it collided with Vargas' Ford, which was exiting a plaza trying to go southbound. Vargas fled the scene on foot. A court appearance for Vargas was scheduled for Monday at the Skokie Courthouse, with no further details disclosed at this time.
