Stolen vehicle chase ends in fatal crash in Sturgis
SIOUX FALLS,S.D. (KELO)-- A police pursuit involving a reported stolen vehicle ended in a deadly crash Tuesday morning on Lazelle Street in Sturgis. At approximately 10:39 a.m. Tuesday, the Sturgis Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle at a residence in Sturgis. Officers responded to the location and quickly located the vehicle. As officers approached the vehicle to make contact with the driver, the suspect fled the scene in a newer Ford F-250 that failed to pull over during a traffic stop and continued westbound on Lazelle Street, at around 70 miles per hour. The suspect vehicle passed other westbound traffic before colliding with a white Honda Accord also traveling westbound on Lazelle Street. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles, unresponsive, and required extrication. The driver of the stolen truck was transported by LifeFlight in critical condition. The driver of the Honda Accord sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The South Dakota Highway Patrol has been requested to investigate the crash. The Sturgis Police Department is conducting a separate criminal investigation involving the driver of the stolen vehicle. Criminal charges are pending, and the incident remains under active investigation.
