Southern Connecticut State University student killed in I-95 crash in Fairfield

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A Southern Connecticut State University student was killed on Friday after being struck by a vehicle on I-95 South in Fairfield, according to the university. Jake Seco, 22, of Norwalk was killed on Friday, Around 2:25 a.m., state police were called to the area of Exit 23 on I-95 South in Fairfield. Preliminary investigation revealed that a Saturn, traveling in the center lane, veered to the left and struck the concrete barrier. The vehicle came uncontrolled final rest in the median, according to state police. The driver of the Saturn, Seco, exited the vehicle, walked in the center lane and was struck by a Nissan Rogue. In a statement shared to the SCSU community, Seco was described as an "active member" of the rugby team and a "familiar presence in the Fitness Center." Seco's experiences in athletics led him to pursue a career as a physical education teacher, according to the statement. "Jake Seco was a valued member of our campus community and a committed club sport student-athlete with SCSU Men's Rugby," Coordinator of Campus Recreation Andrew Marullo said. "Over his four years with the program, he exemplified the brotherhood and pride that define Southern Rugby." The university said counselors are available by calling 203-392-5475 or visiting Counseling Services. Students may also reach out to the Dean of Students or their residence life staff. For urgent or after-hours support, national crisis lines are available. "Those who knew Jake describe him as kind, respectful, always positive, and deeply committed to others," the statement read.
