Sheriff: Wrong-way driver killed in Algoma Twp. crash
ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 58-year-old man died Saturday after crashing head-first into another vehicle while driving in the wrong direction, the Kent County Sheriff's Office said. The 58-year-old man was driving his SUV in the wrong lane of Algoma Avenue NE south of 15 Mile Road in Algoma Township around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when he hit a pickup truck head-on. He became trapped inside his SUV and had to be extricated by first responders, deputies said in a statement. He was hospitalized and later died of his injuries. Deputies say alcohol was likely a factor in the crash. The pickup truck's driver, a 19-year-old Hastings man, and his five passengers were also hospitalized with minor to serious injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kent County Sheriff's Office's Traffic Safety Unit.
