Separate school bus accidents in Dare County Thursday
DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - Dare County Schools confirmed two separate crashes involving district school buses occurred on Thursday, April 2. The crashes took place in the East Lake and Nags Head areas during the morning and afternoon routes. District officials, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel responded to both scenes. While students were onboard during both incidents, the school district reported that everyone was evaluated and there were no serious injuries reported. The first accident occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. in the East Lake area. At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying one middle school student and two elementary school students, officials confirmed in a social media post. Local law enforcement, emergency medical services, a school nurse, and district officials arrived at the scene immediately following the report. Medical personnel evaluated and released the bus driver and one student at the East Lake scene. Dare County Schools used a different bus to complete the remainder of the morning route. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the incident and officials confirmed that no citations have been issued. A second accident involving Bus 9 was reported in the Nags Head area at 2:53 p.m. District administrators and law enforcement responded to the site. No injuries were reported. The Dare County Schools transportation department contacted the families of the students on the buses. Bus delays were expected throughout Dare County on Thursday afternoon. School officials stated that additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
