Roadside mechanic killed in I-5 crash near Lodi

(FOX40.COM) — A roadside mechanic was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck during a crash involving two big rigs on Interstate 5 near Peltier Road, authorities said. According to the California Highway Patrol Stockton division, the incident occurred just after 6 a.m. on the northbound I-5. Investigators reported that a big rig hauling cardboard was traveling in the No. 2 lane at about 52 mph when it approached a disabled commercial vehicle stopped on the right shoulder. CHP said that a mechanic was underneath the disabled truck performing repairs at the time. Authorities stated that the driver of the moving big rig fell asleep, causing the vehicle to drift to the right and collide with the disabled truck. The impact forced part of the undercarriage into the area beneath the vehicle, striking the mechanic. CHP told FOX40 that the mechanic was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The crash initially blocked lanes of traffic on northbound I-5, but all lanes have since reopened. The incident remains under investigation.
