Richmond father killed in crash, driver accused of leaving him for dead

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Chesterfield County man is facing charges after police say he crashed into a tree and left his passenger, a 35-year-old Richmond father, for dead. At about 3:43 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 5200 block of Warwick Road for report of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree. When they arrived, officers found 35-year-old Larry Johnson of Richmond -- alone, unresponsive and not breathing -- in the vehicle's passenger seat. He died at the scene. Police said the driver left the area before officers arrived. Investigators later arrested 34-year-old William Sumner, Jr. of Chesterfield, whom they believe to be that driver, at a nearby hotel. As of the time of reporting, Sumner has been charged with felony hit-and-run. However, additional charges are pending. 8News has learned that Johnson was the father of a 6-month-old boy. Just a day after Johnson's death, his son's mother -- 31-year-old Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell of Richmond -- was shot and killed by a police officer at the Belt Atlantic Apartments on Midlothian Turnpike. No additional information on this crash is available as of the time of reporting. The investigation continues. If you know anything about this crash, you are asked to contact the Richmond Police Department at 804-646-1369. You can also submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers either by calling 804-780-1000 or by using the P3 app.
