Retirement of all planes related to deadly Louisville crash
During the fourth-quarter earnings call, United Postal Service CEO Carol Tome announced that the company has retired all of its McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo planes following a fatal crash in Louisville. Tome explained that UPS has been systematically modernizing its global air fleet and has chosen to accelerate these efforts by retiring the MD-11 aircraft. The company has already completed this transition and will be replacing the retired planes with more efficient Boeing 767 aircraft. UPS anticipates receiving about 18 new Boeing 767 planes over the next 15 months, with 15 scheduled for delivery this year. These changes are part of UPS's strategy to develop a more efficient global network for growth and profitability. The decision to retire the MD-11 fleet was made after one of the planes crashed, killing 14 people, and UPS has decided to replace the entire fleet due to safety concerns.
