Report shows more fatalities from car crashes than homicides in metro Atlanta

A recent report reveals that in 2024, there were more fatalities in car accidents in metro Atlanta than homicides, according to Propel ATL, an organization advocating for road safety. The report, titled "The Human Cost of Mobility: 2024," documented 425 traffic-related deaths compared to 410 murders. A significant number of traffic deaths occurred in low-income and Black neighborhoods, with DeKalb County registering the highest fatality count and Fulton County reporting the most severe injuries. According to Propel ATL's executive director, Rebecca Serna, solutions to prevent most of these accidents are straightforward and involve measures such as slowing down drivers by narrowing lanes and improving pedestrian crossings. While traffic-related deaths decreased by nine percent in 2024 from the previous year, there was an increase in pedestrian and cyclist fatalities, including a tragic hit-and-run incident on Thanksgiving Day that claimed the life of a beloved DeKalb County cyclist. The victim's daughter expressed the ongoing pain from the loss and emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for all modes of transportation.
