Prosecutors say driver in deadly Sandy pedestrian accident had blood alcohol content 6 times legal limit

A woman from Draper, identified as Zoe Carisa Blankenstein, has been charged by investigators for allegedly causing the death of a pedestrian in a Sandy crosswalk while driving under the heavy influence of alcohol. Blankenstein, aged 56, faces charges in 3rd District Court that include automobile homicide, interfering with police, possessing an open container of alcohol in her vehicle, and running a stop sign. The incident occurred on January 15, around 7 p.m., when Blankenstein's Ford Escape hit the pedestrian, Joshua M. Perry, 40, while he was crossing 1000 East at 11000 South. Perry suffered severe injuries, including a nonrecoverable traumatic brain injury and skull fracture. Despite the accident, Blankenstein reportedly showed no concern for Perry and claimed he came out of nowhere. Police found Blankenstein to have a high blood-alcohol level of 0.309%, far exceeding the legal limit, which she attributed to celebrating her birthday prior to the incident.
