Police name deceased in crash that backed up I-81 traffic for miles

A motorcycle rider from Watertown, N.Y., was killed in a crash over the weekend, the New York State Police said on Monday. The rider was identified as Christopher D. Messerlie, 26. Emergency crews responded to the incident on I-81 near Exit 52 toward Cortland, N.Y., around 10:23 a.m. on June 13. A preliminary investigation determined that Messerlie was traveling south on I-81 when he struck a guide rail. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash caused both lanes of I-81 to be shut down. As a result, traffic was backed up for 2 miles. The City of Cortland Police, the Cortland Fire Department, Fire Police, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department and TLC ambulance assisted troopers.
