Police car rammed by DUI driver in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after running a red light and crashing into a Chula Vista police patrol vehicle early Sunday morning, authorities said. The collision happened around 1:58 a.m. at the intersection of Olympic Parkway and Santa Venetia Street, according to the Chula Vista Police Department. Officers witnessed a white four-door sedan traveling at a high rate of speed through the intersection against a solid red light before colliding with an on-duty police officer's car. Officers who were nearby immediately began rendering aid to the injured officers and the occupants of the sedan. Authorities said two people inside the sedan suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a nearby trauma center. The officer driving the patrol vehicle was also transported to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police confirmed an arrest was made. CVPD's Traffic Division is leading the investigation.
