Police: 1 injured after truck crashes into train in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man has life-threatening injuries after a truck crashed into a train on Yadkin Road Thursday afternoon, Chesapeake police said. Video shared with WAVY.com shows the truck starting to drive across the track, where the train collided with the rear of the truck, splitting its tank from the cab of the truck, with both landing in a nearby ditch. Contents from the tank can be seen spilling onto the ground. Chesapeake Police said it responded to the scene and said the truck overturned as a result of the crash in the 2900 block of Yadkin Road, and there was what it described as a minor fuel-related hazmat situation identified at the scene. It said there was no immediate danger to the public. Preliminary findings indicate the truck failed to stop at a posted stop sign prior to the collision, according to Chesapeake Police, who are investigating the crash. A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern said the incident happened around 4:46 p.m. involving a vehicle and an eastbound train at the Yadkin Road crossing at milepost N9.9 in Chesapeake. No one on the train's crew was injured, according to Norfolk Southern. Chesapeake Police officers responded to the 2900 block of Yadkin Road for a reported collision involving a vehicle and a train. Photos and WAVY viewer video from the scene show a septic truck in a ditch, with the cab split off from the rear of the truck next to the railroad crossing. First responders can be seen at the scene. The 3500 block of Yadkin Road is closed in both directions due to the crash, according to the city of Chesapeake.
