Pilot sentenced after fatal December 2021 crash in Sevier County

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — On Monday, a man was sentenced to two years on charges of criminally negligent homicide after a fatal helicopter crash in Sevier County. Matthew Jones has to report to jail within 30 days to serve time. He was indicted in 2024 on a reckless homicide charge, and in 2025, he pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide. In December 2021, Jones was flying a helicopter that crashed near the Sevier-Cocke County line, killing the passenger and seriously injuring Jones. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board said that airport staff had warned Jones multiple times about poor weather conditions that day. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misleading people in cases that happened before the crash.
