Pilot, flight instructor who died in Akron plane crash identified: Medical Examiner

Tuesday, the office identified the flight instructor on the plane as 39-year-old Colin Albee from Allen, Texas and the pilot, who owned the plane, as 38-year-old David Garcia from Hammond, Indiana. The plane, a a 1963 Piper Cherokee, had taken off from Akron Fulton Airport on May 14 when it crashed into a home on the 2200 block of Canterbury Circle, leading to a large fire, according to investigators. The two people who had been on the plane were pronounced dead at the scene. The family, who had been in the home at the time of the crash, was able to escape. Preliminary findings showed the plane had been flying for over an hour and had made two approaches back to the airport. It was on the second attempt that something upset the aircraft. It feel from about 1,000 feet in the air. An Ohio State Highway Patrol investigation with assistance from the FAA and the NTSB is ongoing.
