Phelps County woman dies in single-vehicle crash

PHELPS COUNTY, Mo. — A Phelps County woman has died after a single-vehicle crash on Saturday, March 28. The crash occurred around 2:10 a.m. as a 23-year-old Rolla, Missouri, woman was driving on County Road 1000, a quarter mile east of Highway B in St. James, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). MSHP says the incident occured as the woman was driving a 2013 Cadillac SRX east when it went off the right side of the road, struck a culvert and returned to the roadway. The report states the woman overcorrected the vehicle, which resulted in the vehicle returning to the right side of the road, where it overturned, ejecting the woman before it hit a mailbox and a tree. The Phelps County Coroner Ernie Coverdell pronounced the woman dead on the scene around 2:31 a.m. Troopers said the woman was not wearing a seatbelt during the incident. Officials from the Phelps County Sheriff's Office, St. James Police Department, St. James Fire Department and the St. James Ambulance District assisted MSHP in the crash. This is the second fatality for March and the fifth for 2026 for Troop I.
