Pedestrian in wheelchair dies after crash on near south side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — A pedestrian in a wheelchair died following a hit-and-run crash on the near south side of Indianapolis. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of East Raymond and Shelby streets around 10 p.m. Sunday to investigate a crash involving a pedestrian. When police arrived at the scene, they located a man in a wheelchair who appeared to have suffered serious injuries. The man was taken to an area hospital. He later died from his injuries, police said. The Marion County Coroner's Office identified him as 50-year-old Earl Cecil Scruggs. IMPD indicated that the driver who was involved in the incident did not remain on scene. Police believe the pedestrian was in the median when the crash happened. Witnesses told law enforcement that a driver in a white pickup hit the pedestrian and then fled westbound on Raymond Street.
