Parents of teen golf cart driver charged in crash that killed 13-year-old girl in North Carolina
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The parents of one of the teens involved in a fatal golf cart crash could be held responsible for the deadly crash. Court records show that Jeffrey and Sherrie Comitz were each charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile in connection with the death of 13-year-old Julia Rooney on March 23. A criminal summons was issued in May. Their daughter, also 13, was allegedly behind the wheel of the golf cart carrying Julia on Swamp Rose Drive, off of Brawley School Road. Police say Julia was in the passenger seat when she fell as the vehicle was making a turn. Further, Jeffrey is charged with failing to maintain liability insurance and with allowing a driver to operate a motor vehicle without registration. Sherrie was also charged with allowing an unlicensed person to drive. All of the suspected crimes are misdemeanors. Several others were reported injured in the crash. Both Jeffrey and Sherrie Comitz waived their right to counsel in the Iredell County court on Thursday. They have a disposition hearing on Sept 10. Julia attended Woodland Heights Middle and was a longtime cheerleader at ATA Cheer Lake Norman.
