One killed, several critically hurt after wrong-way crash on I-196 in Grand Rapids
One person is dead and several others are hurt following a head-on crash in Grand Rapids Wednesday evening, according to Michigan State Police (MSP). The crash happened on westbound I-196 near the Lake Michigan Drive exit around 8 p.m., troopers said. A 23-year-old man was driving an SUV on eastbound I-196 when he crossed the median and crashed into a westbound vehicle head-on, according to MSP. Investigators are still working to learn why the driver crossed the median. There were four people inside the SUV. Troopers said one passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, two were critically injured and taken to the hospital, and the final passenger is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. A 47-year-old woman, who was the front seat passenger, was critically injured and taken to the hospital whereas the driver, a 49-year-old man, was not injured. A 7-year-old boy, who was sitting in the backseat, was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition "as a precaution," according to troopers. As of Wednesday night, that portion of westbound I-196 remains shut down while troopers process the scene. This incident remains under investigation by MSP.
