One dead after vehicle crashes into Pineville Town Hall building at high speed

PINEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A young man is dead after a high-speed crash into the Pineville Town Hall and library Monday night.  The Pineville Police and Fire departments responded around 9:30 p.m. to the building that also houses the Pineville branch of the Mecklenburg County Library in the 500 block of Main Street.  Officials say a Honda passenger vehicle was driving at a high speed west on NC-51. After crossing the railroad tracks, it appears that the Honda lost control, crashing into the building. Officers provided life-saving efforts, but the driver, 22-year-old Souleyman Bakayoko, died at the crash site. Bakayoko was alone in the vehicle, and no one else was hurt. Security video of the incident shows the car flying across a grassy area in front of the police station, sparks in its wake from hitting other objects, before ultimately crashing into the town hall. Officials confirm that the vehicle fully entered the building's downstairs area. First responders were seen exiting a large hole in the building caused by the crash. Main Street was closed between the train tracks and Yandle Street, but has since reopened. Police say the Honda was not being pursued by law enforcement. A death investigation is ongoing.
