One dead after police chase ends in fiery crash on Lake Ave.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A person is dead after a police chase ended in a fiery car crash on Lake Avenue. Around 10:14 a.m. Friday, New York State Police said they attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Hudson Avenue and Avenue D, but they said, the driver failed to comply, leading to a police chase. During the pursuit, troopers said the vehicle was heading south on Lake Avenue when they deployed spike strips, disabling the vehicle. The suspect's car side-swiped another car before crashing into a Jeep filled head-on with three people. The suspect's vehicle caught fire and was unable to get out of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The three occupants of the Jeep were hospitalized with minor injuries. News 8 spoke with a bystander at the scene, who was mowing when he heard the impact. “I heard the big boom. I heard a short squeal. Then I heard a big smash, and then I looked over, and then the car caught on fire," said Joe Benson. "And then the guy is still in the car. It's horrible." He said he used to live on Lake Avenue and witnessed multiple crashes. “So I've seen stuff like this all the time, living on Lake Avenue," he said. "Crashes, people going in the back of buses, high speed chases -- all the time out of the nine years. Not all the time, but several times out of nine years.” NYSP has not confirmed the owner of the car or if it was stolen but said it had switched plates. They are working to find a VIN number.
