One dead after fiery car crash in Alton

ALTON, Ill. - Officials are investigating a fatal crash late Sunday night in Alton, Illinois. According to the Alton Police Department, officers were called to the 2200 block of State St. just before 11:30 p.m. for a crash with a vehicle on fire. When police arrived, they found a pickup truck that was "fully engulfed in flames" in front of a home. The Alton Fire Department extinguished the flames, and officials found remains of an individual inside the truck. The department's preliminary investigation says that the pickup truck was traveling northbound along State Street when it traveled off the road, hit an unoccupied vehicle and then struck a tree. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances behind the fatal crash. The remains located in the truck were transported to the Madison County Coroner's Office, which is now working to identify the remains and determine an official cause of death.
