Officials caution against risking life at rail crossings following fatal Jefferson County incident.
Authorities are emphasizing the need for caution at railroad crossings following a tragic incident in Jefferson County, where a minivan collided with a freight train resulting in the deaths of two women. The victims have been identified as Carolyn Berry and Aldereka Ikes. Birmingham Police and Operation Lifesaver are stressing the importance of adhering to railroad crossing regulations to prevent such accidents. Officer De'Rell Freeman of the Birmingham Police Department emphasized the dangers of disregarding these rules, noting that trains can move faster than one might expect. Freeman also pointed out the legal repercussions of ignoring railroad crossing signals. Jennifer DeAngelis from Operation Lifesaver warned about the deceptive appearance of train speeds, highlighting the importance of being alert at crossings. Last year, Alabama ranked seventh in train collisions, with significant injuries and fatalities as a consequence.
