Officer from Kaufman dies in head-on collision
A tragic incident occurred when a Kaufman police officer, Officer Austin Cooley, lost his life in a car accident on his way home from work. The crash took place near the intersection of State Highway 34 and County Road 2186, just south of Greenville, Texas. As reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Officer Cooley was driving north on Hwy. 34 when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a pickup truck in the southbound lane. Officer Cooley, who was a 26-year-old Wolfe City resident, was not only a dedicated police officer at the Kaufman Police Department but also a supportive mentor to new officers and a beloved friend and colleague to many. Additionally, he was a devoted husband and father. The department paid tribute to him on social media, highlighting his exceptional qualities and the impact he had on those around him. Officer Cooley also served as a South Hunt County Fire Rescue deputy chief and had previously worked as a Hunt County detention officer. Both of his departments expressed profound sadness at his passing and praised his unwavering commitment to serving the community. Our thoughts are with Officer Cooley's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
