Off-duty Nassau County cop fatally hit by suspected drunk driver, authorities report
A tragic car accident involving an off-duty Nassau County police officer and an alleged drunk driver occurred at Alexander Avenue and Route 347 in Saint James on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of the officer, Patricia Espinosa. The driver of the pickup truck, Matthew Smith, ran a red light and collided with Espinosa's sedan. Smith has been charged with DWI and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries along with a passenger. The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association expressed sorrow over the loss of Officer Espinosa and highlighted her dedication to her profession and her family. County Executive Bruce Blakeman also mourned her death and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in her honor. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
