Bicyclist dead following crash in north Phoenix, driver in custody

Phoenix Police say a driver has been taken into custody following a deadly crash involving a bicyclist early Tuesday morning.Officers responded at around 5:54 a.m. on June 9 to the area of Greenway Road and Cave Creek Road regarding a collision."When officers arrived, they located the adult bicycle rider in critical condition," police said. The bicyclist was taken by Phoenix Fire crews to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital."Preliminary information given to detectives indicated the driver was eastbound on Greenway Road, attempting to make a left to go north on Cave Creek Road, when he failed to yield to the bicyclist. After striking the adult female, the driver stopped the vehicle; the passenger got out, and the driver left the area," police explained.The driver was identified as 47-year-old Martin De Jesus Trinidad Sanchez. He was found at a home nearby and was arrested.Police only identified the victim as a woman, but didn't release her name and age.It's unknown why the passenger left the scene, and police didn't say if investigators are searching for that person."Additional information related to this incident remain a part of the ongoing investigation.
