Off-duty cop dies in drunk driving accident on Long Island: authorities

A 20-year-old man has been taken into police custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence, resulting in a fatal collision with another vehicle that claimed the life of a local police officer. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Patricia Espinosa, tragically lost her life after being struck while driving on Route 347 early Saturday. The driver responsible for the crash, Matthew Smith, allegedly disregarded a red light on Alexander Avenue before the incident. The officer was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, while Smith and his passenger, John Andali, both sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the hospital. The deceased officer, Patricia Espinosa, served in the Nassau County Police Department and was remembered with sorrow and respect by Nassau County authorities, including Executive Bruce Blakeman. Flags have been ordered to be flown at half-mast in honor of Espinosa until her burial. The Nassau County PBA President, Tommy Shevlin, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, emphasizing Espinosa's dedication and sacrifice, and recognizing her as a valuable member of the law enforcement community. Espinosa leaves behind a husband, who is also a police officer, as well as young daughter Mia. Her commitment and the impact she made during her service will be remembered and honored by her colleagues and family.
