Nearly 30 car accidents in Greene County from Tuesday storms

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Tuesday's round of severe weather led to dozens of crashes and even damage to police vehicles across the area Tuesday afternoon, according to Springfield police. From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to 19 calls for service involving motor vehicle crashes, said Cris Swaters with the department. Of those, four involved injuries, 11 were non-injury crashes and four had unknown injury status. Across Greene County in total, authorities handled 29 crashes during the same timeframe, including five with reported injuries, 13 non-injury crashes and 11 with unknown injuries. Several Springfield police vehicles were also damaged during the storms. The department’s fleet supervisor is in the process of inspecting all police-owned vehicles to assess the extent of the damage. Officers also received a call just before noon reporting that a person had been struck in the head by a hailstone and was bleeding near the Walmart on North Kansas Expressway. However, the individual left the area before officers arrived, and no further information was immediately available. The crashes and damage come as severe storms moved through the region, producing large hail and hazardous driving conditions.
