MSP: Toddler killed in single-car crash on I-96 near Lowell
LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 19-month-old child was killed in a crash on westbound I-96 south of Lowell Tuesday, state police say. The crash involved one vehicle, a pickup truck, being driven by a 41-year-old Lansing woman, MSP said in a statement Wednesday. The woman was driving "erratically" and at a "high rate of speed" near Alden Nash Road when the pickup crossed the median and left the roadway before crashing into a group of trees. The 19-month-old girl suffered "severe injuries" in the crash. First responders rendered aid at the scene, but she was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive. Authorities said they believe drugs and alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and they are awaiting a toxicology report before considering charges. Westbound traffic on I-96 was diverted at Nash Highway for about an hour and a half starting around 2:15 p.m., according to MDOT.
