McBain man arrested for operating while intoxicated after a fatal crash

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A man has been arrested for operating while intoxicated after a fatal crash in Chippewa County. On July 13 at 10:48 p.m., Michigan State Police (MSP) said a trooper responded to a two-vehicle head-on crash on W. Lakeshore Drive near W. Lake Street in Bay Mills Township. An investigation of the crash indicated a Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling westbound on W. Lakeshore Drive when it crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound Ford Fiesta. MSP said the driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 62-year-old woman from Lake Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, a 46-year-old man from McBain, displayed what troopers believe were signs of intoxication during the on-scene investigation. The man was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while license suspended, said MSP. Due to the injuries the man sustained in the crash, police said the suspect was transported to MyMichigan Medical Center Sault and later transferred to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey for further treatment. The man remains in the custody of MSP and will be lodged in the Chippewa County Jail once he is medically cleared.
