Man sentenced for fatal crash

BERLIN TWP. — A man who caused the death of a motorcyclist last year was recently sentenced to jail. A 23-year-old Lorain man pleaded no contest to one count of vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor. Erie County Municipal Court Judge C.J. Kamm sentenced him to three months in jail with two months suspended. His operator's license was suspended for two years. He was also ordered to pay $285 in court costs and a $500 fine. He will be placed on five years of probation and must complete an eight-hour, in-person driving course and submit proof to the probation department. In exchange for his no-contest plea, one minor misdemeanor count of failure to yield the right of way was dismissed by the state. He began his 30-day sentence at Erie County Jail on Monday and is expected to be released on May 26. Background Just before 9 p.m. on Aug. 31, first responders were called to the 3700 block of U.S. 6 in Berlin Township for the report of a two-vehicle crash. A motorcycle operated by Cade J. Gwynn, 23, of Huron was westbound on U.S. 6 while the Lorain man was eastbound in a Chevrolet Malibu, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report. The Lorain man attempted a left-hand turn into a private drive and pulled into Gwynn's path of travel, the report states. The motorcycle struck the Malibu and Gwynn was ejected. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The Lorain man was wearing a seatbelt and suffered a possible injury, according to the report.
