(USAO) announced Wednesday. Spiro Stafilatos, 38, of Silver Spring, Md, was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault while armed, and fleeing. He was found guilty by a D.C. Superior Court jury on all counts. According to court documents, on Dec. 30, 2022, at 4:28 p.m., Stafilatos was driving a dark Buick LeSabre sedan in the 700 block of 14th Street, NW, near the White House. U.S. Secret Service agents on mountain bikes spotted that Stafilatos' vehicle did not have a front tag, and the back Maryland hard tag did not have a sticker. The officers then ran the tag while the Buick stopped to let a passenger out and determined that the tag belonged to a 2016 Chevrolet. The USAO stated that officers approached the Buick and made contact with Stafilatos, notifying him of his infraction, to which he responded by asking if he would get a ticket. Police added that Stafilatos refused to give officers his license, and officers spotted a suspected open beer container inside. Court documents continued, stating that when officers told Stafilatos that his vehicle was still in drive and asked him to put it in park. Instead of complying, he sped off north on 15th St. NW towards the 1400 block of New York Avenue, NW. According to the USAO, the Buick entered the intersection while the light was red and was struck by another vehicle. The Buick spun counterclockwise, striking two pedestrians who were in the crosswalk, throwing them into the middle of New York Ave, NW. Both pedestrians were taken to the hospital, where one victim, Shuyu Sui, was pronounced dead and the woman was treated for injuries to her head and body. Stafilatos was placed under arrest and has been in custody since. He is set to be sentenced on June 25, 2026.
