Man found dead after Barberton crash had been shot: police

BARBERTON, Ohio (WJW) -- Barberton police are investigating a Thursday night, June 18, crash in which one person inside the vehicle was found dead of a gunshot wound. Police responded at 10 p.m. to a report of a crash near South Van Buren and Harold avenues, according to a news release. They found a vehicle that had crashed into a utility pole. One male inside the vehicle was declared dead at the scene and appeared to have suffered injuries from the crash as well as a gunshot, according to the release. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday identified the victim as a 20-year-old Benjamin Hutchison, of Akron. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound to the torso. Bystanders were performing CPR when first responders arrived, according to the medical examiner's office. Two others who were injured were transported to a hospital for treatment. Barberton police detectives continue to investigate alongside the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the medical examiner's office.
