Man faces DUI charge after deadly dirt bike crash in Woonsocket
Woonsocket police said a man has died and another was charged with DUI after a dirt bike crash on Monday. According to police, officers responded to 193 Transit St. for a report of a dirt bike crash at around 2:03 a.m. Officers found two men in the area of the crashed bike with serious injuries. Woonsocket police said the operator, Leonel Nunez Tavarez, sustained a serious leg injury and a 29-year-old passenger was unresponsive. They were transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Investigation revealed that Tavarez was traveling inbound on Transit Street, lost control of the bike, and crashed into a retaining wall, officials said. The two were not wearing helmets. Police said Tavarez was also impaired at the time. Woonsocket police said Tavarez will be facing charges of driving to endanger- death resulting, driving under the influence- death resulting, and driving without a license. Officials said Tavarez remains hospitalized in stable condition.
