Man charged with reckless homicide after fatal South Shore crash
CHICAGO (WGN) — A man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in the South Shore neighborhood early Sunday morning. The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. in the 6900 block of South Stony Island Avenue, according to Chicago police. Police said a 64-year-old woman was riding as a passenger in a dark-colored SUV traveling north when a sedan heading east allegedly struck the vehicle. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver of the sedan fled on foot in an unknown direction. No other injuries were reported. Investigators say 45-year-old Garland Spikes was driving the sedan and ran a red light before causing the crash. Spikes is charged with reckless homicide, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving. He is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing Tuesday.
