BPD: Pedestrian killed in Union Avenue hit-and-run after exiting vehicle

A pedestrian was killed after getting out of a vehicle on Union Avenue and was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle late Saturday night. The Bakersfield Police Department said on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at around 10:45 p.m., officers were called to the 3600 block of Union Avenue regarding a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found a pedestrian down in the roadway suffering severe injuries. Medical aid arrived and took the pedestrian to a hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. Police said the driver of the vehicle involved did not stop and drove away from the scene immediately after the crash. According to police, the preliminary investigation found that the pedestrian got out of a vehicle that had stopped in the number one lane of northbound Union Avenue when they were struck by the involved vehicle, which was travelling north in the number two lane. Police said speed is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. It is unknown whether intoxication may have been involved, according to police.
