Man charged with felony DUI after crash pinning 11-year-old girl on Fourth of July
OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — The driver in a suspected DUI crash that injured four children in Ogden on the Fourth of July has been charged. Tyler Allen Crouch, 49, was charged in Weber County with driving under the influence - two or more priors in 10 years, a third-degree felony, four counts of negligently operating a vehicle with injury - two or more priors in 10 years (one with serious injury upgrade), a third-degree felony, and alcohol restricted driver, a class B misdemeanor. Crouch is reportedly a former police officer. He worked for the Ogden Police Department from October 2009 until December 2017, when his employment was terminated. He has had no affiliation with Ogden Police since his termination in 2017. At about 10:20 p.m. on July 4, officers from multiple agencies responded to a crash at 4225 Airport Road in Ogden. A 911 caller reported that her daughter had been pinned between two vehicles. Upon arrival, police learned that a large group was watching fireworks from a parking lot across from the airport. At some point, a man, later identified as Crouch, drove a white 2018 GMC Sierra out of the parking lot and crashed. Police said he "peeled out" of the parking lot in an attempt to get to Airport Road, with witnesses reporting his driving to be at an unsafe speed. Crouch then struck a parked white 2017 Dodge Charger. An 11-year-old girl was standing outside the Charger and became "sandwiched" between the GMC and the Charger, court documents state. Four children total were injured in the crash, with the 11-year-old sustaining the most serious injuries. She was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital before being flown to Primary's Children's Hospital. "The impact between the GMC and the Dodge was sufficient to push the Dodge into a Pontiac parked a few feet away," court documents state. "Many bystanders who witnessed the crash began breaking the windows to get the male out of the truck." First responders arrived on scene and dispersed the crowd as much as possible. They extricated Crouch from the GMC and observed that he was "very disoriented and unstable on his feet." Crouch was taken to the emergency room. Upon speaking with police, Crouch stated that he did not remember what had occurred. Police also conducted sobriety tests on Crouch and found that he showed indicators of driving under the influence of THC or other controlled substances. Crouch was convicted of two DUIs in the past. All four children suffered injuries in the crash. No further information is available at this time.
