Man charged after crash on Gulf Freeway that killed 5-year-old child, HPD says
HOUSTON (CW39) — A 60-year-old man is charged with manslaughter after investigators say he caused a crash in Friendswood which killed a 5-year-old girl. Daniel Ruiz is charged in connection with the crash that happened on the Gulf Freeway around 6:40 p.m. last Thursday. A marked tow truck driver was going southbound on the freeway’s service road and turned on its emergency lights to head to a stalled vehicle, Houston police said. But a green Toyota 4Runner also going southbound hit the back of the tow truck, causing the child in the SUV to suffer a fatal injury. Investigators believe that the child wasn't properly restrained. At the time of the crash, Ruiz was out on probation after prosecutors said he left a 4-year-old in a car in 2024. Currently, investigators do not know the relationship between Ruiz and the child. The investigation is continuing.
