Man accused of murder in deadly pedestrian accident
A 20-year-old man named Santana Zaki Matthews has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed following a fatal five-car crash that involved a pedestrian on Wednesday. The incident took place at the intersection of 16th and L Street Northwest, where Matthews was driving a dark Chevy Malibu southbound on 16th Street NW and collided with a gold Toyota Corolla. This collision caused the Malibu to veer left and strike the pedestrian in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was propelled over a Jeep Cherokee and a Chevy Colorado pick-up truck before landing on the ground. Matthews then fled the scene, hitting additional vehicles before being apprehended by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) on K Street. Upon searching Matthews, MPD officers found a freezer Ziploc bag containing a substance resembling marijuana, a digital scale, and another quart-sized Ziploc bag.
