Man, 24, dead following head-on crash as police continue road safety efforts
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Hawaii (KHON2) -- As police continue their efforts to enforce road safety, another fatal accident occurred on Tuesday, June 16. A 24-year-old man is dead following an early morning head-on crash that took place on South Glenwood Road. Hawaii Police Department said the man was on his motorcycle passing multiple cars in a "no-passing" zone when he approached a blind hill and hit an oncoming car around 12:51 a.m. He was not wearing a helmet, police said. At this time, speed and reckless driving appear to be contributing factors of the crash, police said. The man was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead just before 6 a.m. This marks the 17th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year, compared to 13 at the same time last year. Police said the 43-year-old driver of the car that was hit was not injured from the crash. If anyone has information regarding the collision, they should contact Officer Jerome Duarte at 808-961-2339, or email at [email protected]. This incident is the latest fatal crash along Hawaii county roads. Recently, officers conducted high-visibility traffic enforcement along the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road. Officers reported 450 vehicle stops were made between June 8 through 14 for the following traffic violations: Four arrests were made as a result of the stops, police said. Two of the arrests were for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and the remaining arrests were for other offenses that included: driving without a license, resisting arrest and criminal littering. Drivers are reminded to watch their speed, maintain a safe following distance and obey the rules of the road.
